Salt Lake City, UT – The Utah Cannibals was established in 2010 as a pathway to showcase Utah’s top up and coming high school rugby players. Since 2010, the Utah Cannibals have placed more than a dozen players in the HSAA program and many more have transitioned to Collegiate Rugby as well as Collegiate Football.
The age divisions of the Regional Cup Tournaments have been renamed in 2018. Traditionally the 9/10 Grade teams competed in a Junior Varsity Division, for 2018 this division is called Tier 2. But don’t be fooled by the Tier 2 description, these are still the best 9/10 Graders you will find in the State of Utah. The roster includes 11 players from 2018 Spring 15s State Champion teams. the victorious 2018 High School Rugby Championship team with 6 more coming from the runner-up teams. With high school summer football camps underway, several players were not available for selection.
“Football camps do reduce the size of the pool of All-State players available for selection each year,” said Owen Power – President / Executive Director of Utah Youth Rugby. “But based on what we have seen, we still have the best players available to tour. Regardless, the purpose of the RCT events is to give as many players exposure to high performance rugby as possible. This Tier 2 team is building the base for our Tier 1 team of the future. We build character in youth through rugby. These boys that have been selected to represent their state, are among the very best in Utah and have strong characters. No matter where they finish in Boise this weekend, we know they will do so with integrity. That’s what matters most.”
The Utah Cannibals Pool B schedule for June 22nd is as follows (all times MDT):
