Utah Pummels GNC. Take's second overall in Tourney

Utah had a highly successful trip up to Seattle the weekend of the 15-16th of June.  Utah walked away with 2nd place finishes in both Varsity and JV but that really doesn’t describe what really happened.

JV started off with a smashing victory over Oregon with a score of 24-0 in a balmy 82F and around 65% humidity. Sounds great until you realize if felt over 90 and the players were not used to the humidity and how fast they dehydrated. Feeling highly confident, the JV took the hour off to refuel and rest before meeting Washington. We were not ready for that match. Washington came out hot into their first match of the day and put a smackdown on the JV, defeating them soundly 35-0. This would become a true test of the character of the team and if they could pull themselves together for the next day or if they would wilt.

The varsity started the day with a game late game against the Oregon RedHawks. Oregon scored quickly but that would be the last points they saw for the day. Utah quickly rallied any by the time the whistle blew, the score would be 28-7 in favor of Utah. The varsity boys had a 2 hr gap between games but came out rested against Idaho with a sound defeat of the Idaho All-Stars with 31-5 points. Utah is on a roll.

Varsity had the first game of the day against Washington. Utah scored initially on a penalty kick to make it 3-0 but then a huge Washington team poured it on. Leaving it 15-3 at the half. Again Utah came out with a penalty kick but were vacant on the tries in the second half leaving a final score of 27-6 Utah would meet Washington again in the finals.

The JV also started the day out against Washington in a rematch of the previous day. This time Utah was no slouch with Kody Jacobsen scoring a try and Sam Slivers slotting the conversion. Washington answered but could not convert leaving a 7-5 score for Utah at the half. Second half came on strong with both teams fighting an aggressive attacking battle. Midway through the half, Bridger Gilgen poaches a ball and waltzes into the tryzone untouched. Sam slots the conversion and Utah is up14-5. Washington misses a penalty kick but scores a converted try late in the game. Final score 14-12. They tied for first in the tourney but due to the point difference, they were awarded second in the tourney.

Utah Varsity also man’s up and took the fight to Washington. In a furious battle Washington squeaked a 14-6 victory over the varsity team leaving the varsity in second place.

The major upshot was the number of players selected for the USHSAA tour to Argentina. Francis Bernard, Zach Webber, Calvin Whiting, Gabe Ruflin and Jesse Arias were all selected to go with the National team to Argentina in July. Bridger Gilgen, Matt Miner, Keagan Barnes, Harry Evans, Connor Parry, Colton Swapp, Jaden Rugg, and Darien Powers all were selected to attend the Winter camp for possible selection for the Europe tour in 2014. Taylor Johanson Was selected to try out for the National U20 team.
