Utah Takes 2nd and 3rd at PCAT

Rugby Utah too two All-Star teams to the Pacific Coast All-Star tournament and represented Utah is a tremendous fashion. The boys not only looked but played well, once they got themselves going.

The varsity team was up first against the Bay Area All-Stars. This was primarily an Oakland/ San Mateo team that came out swinging. They scored two tries very quickly putting Utah on their back foot. Perhaps it was the travel, expectations, something but Utah took 30 minutes to get their game faces on and by then the game had pulled away. Utah comes back before the half with a try  and the game is on. Second half was much better for Utah with additional scores coming in off excellent backline play. Still, the defense was too strong and the Lions fell to the Bay area 27-12

On Sunday they faced a strong Hawaiian all-star team and took the previous days frustrations outon an unsuspecting Hawaiian team. With a hat trick by prop Joseph Tuato’o and 3 more from excellent open play, Utah destroyed Hawaii 42-28 to secure a third place finish.

The JV team came out against a Bay area team that was huge. They ran excellent defense and offence and ended up defeating the Bay Area team 25-15. Darian Power was the top scorer with 2 tries and a penalty conversion.

The JV then faced off against the Nor Cal Selects in the finals. It was an incredible game with the first score put up by Utah with a cross kick into the try zone by Darian Power with  Ben Griffin putting it down for a try. The wind was incredible and both teams suffered from kicking throughout the day. At half it was a 15-15 game against the Nor Cal Selects. Second half came with Norcal drawing first blood. Powered by an incredible 5 and 7 combo, they we able to get Utah on their back foot outscoring them in the half 20-10. The final score was 35-25 to Nor Cal. The tournament MVP for the backs was awarded to Keagan Barnes for excellent work at the scrumhalf position.
